Black Sheep Harmony were excited to host our second Sing-appella day on a cold and frosty day in January at the John Cabot academy in Kingswood.

The delegates, who had booked in advance (for a bargain price of £10), all arrived for 9.30am ready for a full day of education and singing.

Following a short group voice test, delegates were split into sections. Tenors, leads, baritones and basses were all pleased to welcome some delegates into their sections.

The day was divided into sessions alternating between the five basic principles of singing and learning the notes of our Sing-appella song - "Shine" by Take That.

Pete ran sessions on Posture, Breathing, Vocal production/Resonance and Vowels and consonants between which the section leaders (Debbie T - tenors, Kathy - leads, Sue D - baritones and Noey - basses) ran note learning sessions, gradually building up the song throughout the day.

There was of course plenty of tea, coffee, cake and chat, and the delegates were entertained during the day by Black Sheep Harmony as well as two of our in-house quartets, Fine Apples and SongSmiths.

As the day drew to an end, Pete revealed the fifth and most important principle of singing… but you’ll have to come to the next Sing-appella day to discover it for yourself!

To round the day off perfectly, after hearing Black Sheep Harmony sing a few repertoire songs, the delegates joined them onstage to sing "Shine" to a small invited audience of friends and family members, before being presented with their certificates.

We are so pleased that a large percentage of the Sing-appella delegates decided to join Black Sheep Harmony on the following Thursday evening at our normal rehearsal venue, Hanham Community Centre. Most of them have already successfully completed the audition process and are full members of the flock while others are still in the process.

And we are thrilled that several are proficient enough to join us at next week's Mid Somerset Festival where we are competing in the "female voice choirs" class!

We think that the day was a great success - can’t wait ‘til the next one!
